A world-leading digital therapeutics company that creates accessible, evidence-based treatments for a range of disorders, including musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. Our mission is to make effective therapy accessible to patients anywhere and at any time. By combining world-class technology with human intervention, Kaia Health offers a complete continuum of MSK care.
Konstantin Mehl and Manuel Thurner founded Kaia Health in 2016. Having struggled with chronic lower back pain, Konstantin experienced firsthand how fragmented the care journey could be. He set out to learn about evidence-based approaches endorsed by expert organizations, including the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society. He ended up turning these evidence-based approaches into affordable, accessible digital treatments using devices such as smartphones and tablets that people already own. This vision led to the Kaia Health of today.
An evidence-based, pain-management app featuring physical exercises and mind-body relaxation techniques to help people with chronic MSK conditions, including back, hip, and knee pain. Launching in fall 2021, Kaia Gateway and Premium Partners offers dynamic triage and escalation pathways, including case review by Kaia Health medical providers. This next-generation MSK solution integrates into the existing care landscape and is the world’s most popular digital MSK platform with 60 million lives covered worldwide1.
Kaia Health computer vision technology provides automated, real-time PT-grade exercise feedback by tracking exercise form through the user’s smartphone camera. This proprietary technology makes it possible for the first time to provide users with exercise guidance during each and every exercise session. With Kaia Health computer vision technology, users have access to:
By Q1 2022, the Kaia Health integrated MSK solution will include telePT and in-house behavioral health support.
Over 12 weeks, users engage with a series of mind-body exercises that respond to individual needs, conditions, and requirements. Users can expect improvement in pain as early as 6 weeks. Mind-body exercises can be completed in about 10 to 25 minutes a day—easily fitting into one’s daily routine. Kaia is based on individual fitness and mobility, so as you grow stronger, your program will change with you.
Kaia Health computer vision technology is the only digital MSK care solution clinically demonstrated to provide accurate, evidence-based, real-time exercise correction.1,2 We’re putting this superior technology into the hands of health plans, providers, employers, and their populations to enable exercise corrections that are as accurate as, and complementary to, corrections provided by a physical therapist.
Other digital solutions in the MSK care market provide no exercise feedback to patients. Many rely on either motion sensors strapped to a patient’s body that offer no exercise correction, or remote physical therapy in which telePTs are not present during each exercise session.
According to the World Health Organization, MSK is the leading contributor to disability worldwide. MSK conditions affect more than 126 million Americans3 and result in annual costs to U.S. employers of $120 billion.4 MSK conditions cost businesses an average of $425 per member per year in medical bills, affect 25% of their workforce, and account for 16% of overall medical spend.1
Kaia Health has raised $125 million to expand clinical capabilities, heavily invest in computer vision technology, and transform treatment pathways for MSK conditions in the U.S. and Europe.
Recent research published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medical Internet Research demonstrated that Kaia Health computer vision technology is as accurate as a physical therapist in suggesting exercise corrections.1 Prior to that, in the largest randomized controlled trial (RCT) in the digital health industry, research demonstrated that an MSK care pathway combining digital therapy, personalized health coaching, and a collaboration with medical providers achieved better outcomes than the standard of care.
